The Boston Red Sox are not living up to expectations so far, but in what is a weak American League, they are far from out of the race.
The Red Sox entered Friday just 3 1/2 games back of a wild-card spot. They will eventually get Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet back and will have a chance to make a late push. They still need some of their underperformers to step up, and Caleb Durbin’s recent surge is a good sign of that.
However, they still need a right-handed bat they can trust. According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox are aggressively searching for a right-handed bat and are willing to take on a bad contract to do so. Well, they may not have to take on a bad contract at all.
Depending on how willing the Red Sox are to add a talented right-hander, they could target Casey Schmitt of the San Francisco Giants. He is having a breakout year, and the Giants could be sellers at the deadline.
Schmitt has an .844 OPS and has already hit a career high of 13 homers. He can play shortstop and second base, and could be a great addition to the Red Sox. He may hit even better playing at Fenway Park.
He would not be cheap, as he is under club control through 2029. However, if the Red Sox are willing to take on a bad contract, they may be willing to give up some prospects for a good one.
