Boston Red Sox fans got to know just the kind of person that rookie starting pitcher Payton Tolle is in Spring Training when he was tasked with giving a presentation about the history of the United States of America to his teammates in the clubhouse.
His presentation ended with him ripping his cut-off flannel shirt open, revealing that he had shaved the letters U-S-A into his chest hair.
The viral moment created fans for life for the 23-year-old from Stillwater, Okla.
He did not make the initial 26-man roster, but was called up immediately after Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet went down with a throwing arm injury six starts into his season.
Tolle’s play since being called up has only strengthened his fandom. But the young pitcher’s calling card will always be his positive attitude and magnetic personality.
His personality was on full display on Wednesday night as he worked through six scoreless innings in the Red Sox’s home win.
At one point in the second inning, Tolle’s antics on the mound derailed the entire NESN broadcast, which could not contain its laughter.
