The 2026 Boston Red Sox aren’t off to the kind of start Craig Breslow had hoped for. They enter June last in the AL East at 25-33, which is their worst record yet through the end of May under him.
The Red Sox’s slow start has been surprising given the progress they made last year, when they had their best season since 2021. It’s also been disappointing given how much Craig Breslow did to improve the roster over the offseason, including acquiring Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Ranger Suarez, Caleb Durbin, and Johan Oviedo.
Boston’s offense hasn’t performed up to expectations, however, ranking 25th in scoring, 29th in home runs and 21st in OPS. The team’s underperformance led Breslow to fire Alex Cora and much of the coaching staff in late April, which wasn’t an easy decision for him.
In a recent interview with Tim Healey of The Boston Globe, Breslow revealed how the Red Sox’s frustrating season is affecting him personally.

“It bothers me incredibly strongly, it keeps me up at night. It consumes my thinking. If it didn’t, then I shouldn’t be doing this job,” Breslow told Healey.
Breslow has already been aggressively reaching out to teams regarding potential trades in an effort to improve Boston’s roster. He hasn’t made much progress given how early it is in the season, but at least he’s trying.
Perhaps he’ll be able to pull off a big trade in June, like he did last year with the Rafael Devers move. Even if he doesn’t, maybe his sleep quality will improve if the Red Sox start playing better, especially at home.
