Foreign nationals residing in Addo in the Eastern Cape are calling on Home Affairs to develop an effective system that will help speed up the permit application process for foreign nationals.
This country has seen a surge in protests and public calls for the removal of undocumented foreign nationals in recent weeks.
The community of Addo outside Gqeberha held a protest march alleging that farmers in the area prefer to employ foreign nationals as cheap labor.
Documented foreign nationals, who have been residing in Addo for over a decade, say, “Home Affairs offices can be where we can apply, so that somebody who had applied cannot be in the community without papers back-to-back. People that come outside go for dirty jobs. They go to the orchards to pick the orange, but the locals are not found there. People need to be informed that these people are coming to do dirty job, which the locals prefer not to do.”
