Residents of Dunnottar in Ekurhuleni have raised mixed reactions about the presence of foreign nationals in the area. While some say they can co-exist with documented migrants, others want them out of the community.
A week ago, some residents took to the streets, demanding law enforcement verify the legal status of foreign nationals and inspect their shops.
Dunnottar residents say some of the foreign nationals have become a law unto themselves.
Dunnottar residents say, “We do not hate foreigners, we don’t like the illegal ones because you cannot confirm that they are here. Even when crime happens, you cannot trace it to them. So, if they leave the country and we have documented ones, we can co-exist. I think we are sick and tired. We have been trying to move them out here in Dunnottar, but still, these people don’t want to go. We came here doing the operation with police, and we told them to close their shop, but they refused,” says one of the residents.
