The Virginia Cavalier football family received unfortunate news on Tuesday afternoon: former Virginia football player, Donovan Johnson Sr., passed away after a nine-month battle with Leukemia. The official Virginia Football social media accounts broke the news shortly after 6 P.M. on Tuesday, and his coaches, teammates, and other athletes within the Virginia family reacted soon after.
During his time in the orange and blue, Johnson appeared in 15 games, recorded 12 tackles, and was one of only 12 true freshmen to appear in a game his first season.
Former Virginia football player and longtime wide receivers coach, Marques Hagans, was only one of many to post online about the impact Donovan had on their lives, and to extend thoughts and prayers to his family. His post below is only a glimpse as to what Donovan’s peers and everyone he involved himself with thought of the young man.
“Donovan Johnson was a bright light in this world. As soon as he flashed his trademark smile, he left you no choice but to do the same. He was full of joy, jokes, love, and loyalty. He was grateful for the opportunities in his life and proud when he made the most of them. He was a role model to my boys and he loved them whole heartedly. He was part of our family. He battled Leukemia with a brave and gracious heart and fought so hard to be here for his family, especially his son. I loved Donovan and I have peace knowing he knew that. I’m grateful for my purpose in this profession, to impact young people and make sure they know how deeply they are loved and believed in. Rest in peace, DonJohn. I will love you forever,” said Coach Hagans on X.
He also shared a touching video as a tribute to their relationship.
We at Streaking the Lawn will join the masses in extending our thoughts and prayers to Donovan’s friends and family. May he rest in peace.
