The government of Ghana is expected to repatriate 300 of its nationals from South Africa this Wednesday morning.
The repatriation of the first group of Ghanaians follows a recent wave of protests against undocumented immigrants in South Africa.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to Pretoria, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, says SA’s Home Affairs Department has vetted the first group of returnees.
Quashie also says that diplomatic efforts between Pretoria and Accra remain central to addressing concerns around undocumented migrants.
He says, “The way to go is through diplomatic engagements. My Foreign Affairs Minister and Honourable (Ronald) Lamola have spoken countless times. They have looked at diplomatic solutions to this problem. We had discussions with DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Cooperation). We had meetings where ambassadors (Tebogo) Seokolo and Nyameko Goso, all of them have one thing in common, we all agree that this should be resolved through the diplomatic channel.”
