It was confirmed on Tuesday that Washington, D.C. is set to host a free FIFA World Cup fan zone on the National Mall this summer, positioning one of sport’s most prestigious global spectacles in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol and incorporating it into America’s 250th birthday festivities.
The fan zone will operate throughout the entire 2026 World Cup, from June 11 through July 19, on the National Mall between 3rd and 4th streets. The National Mall is renowned as the venue for presidential inaugurations and landmark national gatherings, stretching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial.
The free zone has been organized through a collaboration between FIFA and Freedom 250, the administration’s task force overseeing the nation’s 250th anniversary events, as per The Mirror US.

That same Freedom 250 partnership is also responsible for two additional high-profile events scheduled around the National Mall this summer.
On June 14, UFC Freedom 250 will be staged on the South Lawn of the White House, headlined by the lightweight title unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, coinciding with President Trump’s 80th birthday.
In August, an IndyCar race will incorporate the Mall as part of its circuit. The fan zone, therefore, sits at the crossroads of international sport and national celebration in a way rarely witnessed on American soil.
The programming within the zone is designed to cater to all age groups. Organizers confirmed it will feature live game screenings of every U.S. Men’s National Team match, regardless of kickoff time, along with all knockout-round fixtures.
When matches are not being shown, the zone will provide interactive exhibits, food and beverages, live music, cultural programming, and youth activities. It will typically open each day one hour before the first scheduled game.

The fan zone will run alongside Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair, a large-scale festival spanning June 25 to July 10 that stretches from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, showcasing food, entertainment, and cultural activities from every U.S. state and territory, including a 110-foot Ferris wheel. Both events are free and open to the public.
They coincide with ongoing development on the National Mall under the current administration, including the repainting of the reflecting pool and the installation of a Garden of Heroes featuring statues of prominent American historical figures.
The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature an expanded 48-team field, up from the previous 32, and the first to be co-hosted by three nations, with matches distributed across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Eleven of those cities are located in the United States. Washington, D.C., does not host matches itself, but is clearly establishing itself as a premier destination for the tournament nonetheless.
Argentina enters the tournament as the reigning champion, having claimed the 2022 edition in Qatar. The United States, Canada, and Mexico all received automatic qualification as co-hosts. Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan will each be making their World Cup debut. The tournament kicks off on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19.
