Every NFL season delivers a handful of games that feel bigger than the calendar suggests. Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7 already feels like one of them.
NFL Network analyst Marc Ross recently appeared on The Insidersand highlighted Lamar Jackson’s upcoming showdown with Joe Burrow as one of the most compelling quarterback matchups on the 2026 schedule. Honestly, that should surprise no one. Burrow is one of the most dangerous offensive signal-callers that the Ravens will match wits with all season.
“We know, in years past, this has been must-see TV because defense has been optional in these games with the Ravens and the Bengals, particularly because they couldn’t stop anybody… Now with Joe Burrow coming off an injury with a revamped defense, a lot of free-agent signings in the offseason there… Will they be much better?”
These games have become appointment television. In recent seasons, Ravens-Bengals matchups have often resembled organized chaos, the type of contests where defensive coordinators left with headaches and scoreboards needed overtime pay. Ross acknowledged as much, but there’s another reason why this game carries even more intrigue.
The Ravens and Bengals may have more than bragging rights on the line in Week 7
This is more than a game with the potential to evolve into a seven-on-seven drill. An early foothold on first place in the AFC North could be on the line between two teams that have undergone sweeping changes. Both are expected by many to compete for divisional superiority. Jesse Minter now leads the operation. Anthony Weaver takes over on defense, though Coach Minter will call the defensive plays. Delan Doyle inherits the responsibility of shaping an offense centered around one of football’s most dynamic players. That creates plenty of fascinating questions.
Can Baltimore’s defensive makeover finally contain Burrow and Cincinnati’s weapons? Have the Bengals done enough to truly close the gap? The Pittsburgh Steelers won the AFC North last season, but many still view Cincinnati, not Pittsburgh, as Baltimore’s most dangerous challenger.
That’s what makes Week 7 feel important. This won’t decide the division outright. No October game ever truly does, but if Baltimore and Cincinnati perform the way many expect, the winner may walk away holding something valuable: An early edge in what could become the AFC North’s fiercest race.
