South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer weighed in Wednesday on the ongoing tampering discussion tied to the Clemson–Ole Miss situation and made it clear he understands why Dabo Swinney chose to speak out publicly. Beamer said that if the allegations are accurate, the sport has a serious problem on its hands.
“I don’t blame him,” Beamer said. “If that happened the way it’s been described, that’s a big deal. That’s not a gray area. That’s wrong.”
Beamer went on to say that situations involving contact with players who are not in the transfer portal should come with heavy consequences, adding that light punishment will only encourage more of the same behavior across the country.
“If you’re going to have rules, then you have to enforce them,” Beamer said. “And if you don’t enforce them, then what’s the point? If someone is found guilty of doing that, I think the penalty should be severe.”

While acknowledging how complicated the current college football environment has become, Beamer emphasized that some standards should still be clear-cut. In his view, directly reaching out to a player who is already on another school’s roster crosses a line, regardless of how fluid the transfer portal and NIL landscape may be.
Beamer’s comments echo the growing frustration among head coaches who feel the lack of consistent enforcement is eroding trust in the system. Until stronger guardrails are put in place, he suggested, the sport will continue to deal with disputes like this one, even as coaches call for accountability and a more level playing field.
