49ers assistant head coach Gus Bradley was passed over by head coach Kyle Shanahan to hire an old friend with a high defensive coordinator pedigree.
The 49ers are set to hire former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris as their defensive coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Shanahan had signaled at the end-of-year news conference that Bradley was the main candidate.
“I’m going to say it’s a real wide net but Gus is the obvious one to everyone and is to us too,” Shanahan said. “Gus would be the main internal candidate. We feel fortunate to get Gus and great about that. We are going to go through the whole process. There’s requirements we have to do and stuff that we want to do, also. So, hopefully, we can get it settled sooner than later.”

But Shanahan and the front office went with Morris, who previously worked with Shanahan and won a Super Bowl as a defensive coordinator with the Rams.
With the news Morris is headed to San Francisco, the market is quickly moving on Bradley, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.
“Either the Titans or Cardinals could hire him as DC, with Arizona having the edge of making him play-caller,” Breer wrote.

The Cardinals hired Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their head coach on Sunday. The 38-year-old new coach is familiar with Bradley’s work in San Francisco as they both come from the NFC West. The young coach could value the experience of the 59-year-old Bradley.
Bradley was the Colts’ defensive coordinator prior to the 49ers. He was head coach of the Jaguars from 2013 to 2016, where he had an abysmal record of 14-48.
