The Pittsburgh Steelers could reportedly pursue an accomplished head coach to replace Mike Tomlin.
Pittsburgh is expected to talk to Mike McCarthy about their coaching vacancy, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Pittsburgh native spent the 2025 season away from the sidelines after completing a five-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys.
McCarthy achieved his career-defining moment at Pittsburgh’s expense. Fifteen years ago, he and Aaron Rodgers led the Green Bay Packers to a 31-25 win over Tomlin’s Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
Playoffs included, McCarthy has a 185-123 career record as a head coach. He steered the Packers to eight straight postseason appearances from 2009 to 2016 and guided the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 campaigns from 2021 to 2023.
McCarthy has a couple of other interesting links to his hometown team. He worked with Steelers general manager Omar Khan as the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator in 2000.
Hiring McCarthy could also spark speculation about the Steelers retaining Rodgers. McCarthy coached the MVP quarterback for 13 seasons, so his arrival could theoretically convince the 42-year-old to return in 2026.
Before linking McCarthy to the Steelers, Schefter reported that the organization is “open” to re-signing Rodgers, but extending the partnership seems “unlikely” after Tomlin stepped down.
The Steelers have pursued another Packers coach for their job, scheduling an interview with defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. They’ve also requested interviews with defensive coordinators Chris Shula (Los Angeles Rams) and Jesse Minter (Los Angeles Chargers) since Tomlin stepped down on Tuesday.
