Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong took aim at referee Gil Manzano after Hansi Flick’s side were beaten 2-1 by Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday night.
A chaotic game saw Barca have three goals disallowed, a penalty chalked off, and Dani Olmo hit the woodwork twice in the Basque Country.
De Jong admitted his team were wasteful in front of goal but also had some choice words for the match official – who has plenty of previous with Barcelona.
“I thought we deserved to win tonight, we had the chances to do that, but you have to score the goals. I think we played well but we haven’t won the game. You have to score the goals. We had so many opportunities, their goalkeeper had a very good game,” he told the media afterwards.
“The only thing I can say is that you can’t talk to this referee. I’m the captain and I don’t understand it. He looks at me with a face like, ‘I’m better than you.’ It’s frustrating. He can’t behave like that.
“At the end of the game, I was saying to the ref, look for the time, give us more time, add time, and he didn’t. He blew the whistle after nine minutes and that seems crazy to me. I said this to him and he showed me a card. You can’t talk to his referee.”
The result means that Barcelona still lead La Liga but are now just one point ahead of Real Madrid after 20 games played.
