Michigan has agreed to terms with former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham and he will earn an average of $8.2 million over the course of his 5-year deal, per ESPN.
He will make $8 million next season, according to ESPN.
Whittingham will not coach the Utes in the Las Vegas Bowl against Nebraska on Wednesday, ESPN reported.
The 66-year-old native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., spent the last 21 years at Utah, compiling a 177-88 record and going 11-6 in bowls. He won two Pac-12 conference championships in 2021-22.
On Dec. 12, 2025, Whittingham announced he would be stepping down as head coach at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
“I’m a free agent, I’m in the transfer portal,” Whittingham said last week. “Like I said, I’m at peace and I did not want to be that guy that overstayed his welcome with people just saying, ‘Hey, when’s this guy gonna leave?’ That was not my intention, ever. I hope I didn’t do that. I’m sure with some people, I did do that, but the timing to me, the timing is right.”
Michigan fired former coach Sherrone Moore Dec. 10 after two years due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, and after he then arrested as a suspect in an alleged assault.
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer was initially installed as the betting favorite to replace Moore, but DeBoer has consistently said he plans to remain with the Crimson Tide.
