Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones could be available for the start of training camp next summer.
After sustaining an Achilles injury in the Colts‘ Week 14 game with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones underwent season-ending surgery on Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the injury will sideline Jones for “six to eight months,” which would allow him to be “fully cleared” for training camp.
“The belief still is that Jones will play next year in Indianapolis,” Schefter wrote, “but his contract expires after this season and he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.”
As several NFL insiders have already noted, what Jones’ next contract looks like or how negotiations with the Colts — or other teams — play out is a bit of a mystery.
Schefter adds that prior to Jones’ injury, he and the team did not have any contract extension discussions.
“Jones is expected to be interested in returning to Indianapolis, but he also could have other options,” Schefter said. “The Colts are expected to try to re-sign Jones, but the question will be the cost.”
