The NFL is a business first and foremost, and nothing proves that point more than a contract dispute. The Baltimore Ravens have already started looking towards 2026, and with Nnamdi Madubuike’s future somewhat in doubt, the team agreed to a contract extension with defensive tackle Travis Jones. Jones was scheduled to be a free agent in 2026, but Baltimore has now locked up the former UConn star on a well-deserved deal. The 2022 third-round pick started in 15 of 17 regular-season games in 2024, and entered 2025 looking to solidify himself as a key cog in the Ravens‘ stout defensive front.
Lost in all the good news was the fact that the NFLPA was set to file a grievance against the NFL and the Ravens over a lost year of service. According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the hearing was scheduled for today. Jones’ agent, Jared Fox, and the Ravens GM Eric DeCosta came together before the hearing and agreed to an extension.
Jones was in a slightly different situation. In his fourth season, it was widely believed that he was entering the final year of his deal before heading to the open market in March. However, that was not necessarily the case.
Because of an issue with the collective bargaining agreement, Jones did not get an accrued season. With only three accredited years, Jones would have been eligible only to be a restricted free agent in March. That would have presumably made it much easier for the Ravens to keep him by using a second-round restricted free-agent tender, which would have cost in the neighborhood of $6 million.
It was a similar circumstance last year when the Ravens signed Bateman to a short-term contract after he lost an accredited season after starting training camp on the reserve/did not report list. Per the collective bargaining agreement, any player who “failed to report to the club’s preseason training camp on that player’s mandatory reporting date” loses an accrued season.
The Ravens agreed to a deal with Bateman ahead of his “restricted free agent” year and then signed him to a more representative extension a year later.
The NFLPA filed a grievance against the NFL on Jones’ behalf. The hearing was scheduled for today. Jones’ agent, Jared Fox, and the Ravens met before hearing and hammered out extension. Ravens got aggressive to get deal done and make sure Jones was content with contract.

Last season, Jones recorded 42 tackles (22 solo), including 1.0 sack, across 17 regular-season games while playing 600 defensive snaps. With Michael Pierce’s retirement, he was expected to take on an even larger role in 2025.
This season, Jones has 27 pressures, 26th among all NFL defensive tackles according to PFF, and his 74.5 grade is 14th in the NFL. Jones has 34 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in 12 games this season.
