Alabama basketball will take the court against another top-10 opponent in the annual C.M. Newton Classic at Legacy Arena Saturday when the Arizona Wildcats visit Birmingham.
The Wildcats (8-0) are ranked No. 1 in this week’s AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll, and are No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, behind the Michigan Wolverines.
Alabama (7-2) is ranked No. 12 in both polls after beating the Clemson Tigers, 90-84, in the annual ACC/SEC Challenge at Coleman Coliseum last Tuesday. The Tide followed it up with a 97-55 blowout win over the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday.
Labaron Philon, Alabama’s leading scorer this season with 21.6 points per game, scored 29 in the win over Clemson. The Crimson Tide led by as many as 19 in the first half before the Tigers stormed back and grabbed the lead in the game’s final eight-plus minutes. Alabama ended the night with a 9-1 run.
The Tide’s victory against UTSA was never in doubt. Alabama got out to a 56-17 lead at halftime and cruised the rest of the way. Miami Hurricanes transfer guard Jalil Bethea led the Crimson Tide with 21 points in 22 minutes in his first meaningful action this season.
Bethea made six of his 12 shots from the field, including five of 10 from 3-point range. Philon and freshman London Jemison both added 20 points, and Amari Allen recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Arizona rose to No. 1 after a 97-58 rout of the Auburn Tigers in Tucson on Saturday. Wildcats leading scorer Koa Peat (15.9 PPG) led Arizona with 18 points, and former Crimson Tide guard Jaden Bradley, now in his third season with the Wildcats, added 16 in the blowout.
