Auburn football has added another quality coach to its star-heavy defensive coaching staff.
Several reports, including one from Nathan King of Auburn Undercover, show that Auburn is set to hire Tim Banks as its next safeties coach. Banks joins the Auburn staff after spending the last five seasons as the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.
The Volunteers improved nearly every season on defense under Banks’ watch. After ranking No. 11 in the SEC in yards allowed and No. 12 in points allowed during his first season in 2021, Banks led the Tennessee defense to No. 10 in the conference in 2022, No. 4 in 2023, and No. 2 in 2024. The Volunteers slid to No. 14 in 2025, which played a role in Banks and Tennessee parting ways at the end of the season.
Kaleb Beasley and Andre Turrentine were Tennessee’s best-performing safeties last season in terms of coverage. According to Pro Football Focus data, Beasley had a 57% catch rate while Turrentine allowed 62.5% of passes to be caught. Banks’ defensive mind, paired with the likes of Eric Winters, Anquon Fegans, and Kaleb Harris, should take Auburn to new heights defensively.
Banks is now the second former SEC defensive coordinator to join Auburn’s staff, in addition to DJ Durkin, who returns to Auburn’s defensive coordinator role after serving as interim for the Tigers’ last three games of the 2024 season. Earlier this week, Auburn announced the hiring of Coleman Hutzler as EDGE and BUCK coach after spending last season as Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator.
