The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has lauded the anti-apartheid activist, Ashley Kriel, for his bravery in the fight for freedom.
The 20-year-old uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) freedom fighter was shot and killed on the 9th of July 1987, following his return to the country from MK training abroad.
An event to honour the legacy of Kriel was held at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
ANC Provincial Spokesperson, Sifiso Mtsweni, says the party plans to host a series of commemorative events to honour Kriel for his courage in mobilising the people of the Cape Flats against apartheid.
Mtsweni says, “He was killed for fighting for freedom and democracy of our country underpinned by the human rights culture that our democratic constitution today affords our people. In his honour, the ANC will soon co-host commemorative events including a memorial lecture to recall a young brave revolutionary who galvanised the people of the Cap Flats to fight for their own self-determination.”
