The bail application of two suspects accused of the murder of Nelson Mandela Bay Ward councillor, Sicelo Mleve in the Eastern Cape, has been postponed to Monday in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.
20-year-old Lufunolwethu Nyodi and 21-year-old Ahlumile Stofile made a brief appearance. The postponement is to allow the defense to consult with the accused and consider a media application brought before the court to film the bail proceedings.
Mleve was shot and killed in his constituency office in Zwide during voter registration weekend last month. He was a ward councilor and member of the ANC Regional Executive Committee. The suspects remain in custody.
ANC chief whip in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Council Wandisile Jikeka says the accused must not be granted bail.
“We believe that they are a danger to society. If it were up to us, they should not be granted bail. They must remain in custody until their fate is determined. During this period, many councilors and those contesting elections have their lives at risk. If these are the perpetrators, releasing them could place many other lives at risk.”
