The 2026 MLB season has been one to forget for the New York Mets. After entering the year with World Series aspirations and the highest payroll in Major League Baseball, the Mets instead find themselves buried in last place in the National League East. The disappointment has already led to major organizational changes, including the firing of manager Carlos Mendoza, and speculation continues to grow that President of Baseball Operations David Stearns could also be on the hot seat. Despite all of the negativity surrounding the club, Tuesday night produced one unforgettable moment.

A Home Run You’ll Have to See to Believe
During the Mets’ game against the Kansas City Royals, rookie outfielder Carson Benge was involved in one of the most bizarre “Little League home runs” you’ll ever see at the major league level.
You can watch the incredible play HERE. What began as a routine play quickly spiraled into chaos for the Royals, allowing Benge to circle the bases in a sequence that left fans laughing and players stunned. It wasn’t your typical towering blast over the fence, but it was certainly one of the most entertaining highlights of the season.
A Brief Bright Spot in a Difficult Year
For New York, the play served as a rare moment of joy in an otherwise frustrating campaign. The Mets have struggled in nearly every facet of the game throughout the season, and with the trade deadline approaching, they’re expected to shift their focus toward selling rather than buying. That’s a far cry from where many expected them to be after assembling one of baseball’s most expensive rosters.
While the Mets celebrated the unusual play, they would eventually lose the game anyway, leaving little reason to feel good about the crazy and hilarious moment.
Mental mistakes and defensive breakdowns like what we saw are rare at the major league level, making the sequence even more surprising. With two of baseball’s worst teams playing, though, clearly anything is possible.
