The monument of slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran will stand as a beacon of bravery.
That’s according to the Mount Edgecombe Arts and Cultural Council, which will officially unveil the monument at the Shri Mariammen Temple on National Women’s Day next month.
Deokaran, who was a chief accountant in the Gauteng Health Department, was shot dead outside her home in August 2021.
This happened after she exposed corruption in the department.
The council’s treasurer Venashree Naidu says, “We want to bring Babita back home to Mount Edgecombe and we felt it very fitting to have it on Women’s Day. It’s also the month where she passed on, which is the 23rd of August 2021.”
“The family is excited and I’m happy that we have actually chosen to have her monument erected at our heritage site and to honor her, to also create awareness around justice for Babita Deokaran.”
