The Madlanga Commission says it is engaging the Presidency to request a short extension to complete its work.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed the development after President Cyril Ramaphosa said he is open to extending the Commission of Inquiry if requested.
The Commission, which was initially scheduled to sit for six months from September 2025, is expected to conclude its public hearings at the end of this month.
Michaels elaborates: “Look, I mean, I hear you quipping about it, but it’s actually a very serious matter for us. We have quite a number of witnesses who need to answer to very serious allegations that have been made in public testimony.”
“And as you have seen today, there’s more that is coming out. And so we are going through a very meticulous process of understanding and estimating how much time is going to be needed to get through what is on our current schedule,” explains Michaels.
Meanwhile, the Presidency through its spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says it is yet to meet with the commission, as public calls for extension mount.
