The Philadelphia 76ers have been active in the 2026 offseason as new President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey looks to retool a roster that has come close, but has been unable to get over the hump. This is a roster that is one of the more talented ones in the league, but Philadelphia has not been past Round 2 since 2001.
Gansey is doing his best to build a roster that can get it done in the coming season. He brought in Dean Wade, Ariel Hukporti, and Anfernee Simons in free agency while also pulling off a heist by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Now, it appears he has eyes on a bigger fish: LeBron James.
The Sixers have reportedly reached out to the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer and they appear to be on his short list of realistic targets. Super agent Rich Paul wrote down all of the options on a whiteboard on the “Game Over” podcast, which has the Sixers listed in the top left corner. The core players have been written for Philadelphia along with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Yes, James is 41 and will be entering year 24, but he is still one of the best in the game. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025-26 and still showed an ability to do a number of different things on the floor. The Sixers won’t ask too much of him in this role either and will be able to take pressure off him due to the talent around him. If Philadelphia lands him, then James makes a huge difference in a number of areas.
