The Madlanga Commission has been shown WhatsApp messages between businessman Mohammed “Mo” Sayed and suspended Deputy Crime Intelligence head Major General Feroz Khan that according to the Commission’s evidence leader, reflect hostility towards journalists.
The messages relate to a media statement prepared by journalist Yusuf Abramjee on behalf of Tax Justice South Africa about the alleged flooding of illegal tobacco products into the South African market.

In one exchange, Sayed used profane language, saying he would “F up” Abramjee, with Khan responding in agreement.
Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim told the Commission she introduced the messages not only because they relate to allegations involving Carnilinx, which is co-founded by Sayed, but to demonstrate what she described as an attitude of hostility towards individuals, including journalists.
“Now, the reason I’m actually drawing this to the Commission’s attention is not just because it’s linked to Carnilinx and the subject matter we’ve been discussing and the allegations of illegal criminal conduct by Carnolinx, but because it’s not the only incident in which there is this attitude and hostility towards other individuals, including journalists.”
