The South African government has rejected claims by Ghana that a Ghanaian national was killed during protests against undocumented immigration.
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says the 35-year-old man was shot and killed at his workplace in Nyanga on 29 June in what police believe was an extortion-related attack, unrelated to the protests.
Kubayi urged Ghana to use diplomatic channels when raising concerns and warned against spreading misinformation.
She also extended condolences to the victim’s family and said police are investigating the murder.
Meanwhile, refugees and asylum seekers have been camping on the pavements outside the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Office on Che Guevara Road in Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The foreign nationals say they fled their communities in the city, following anti-undocumented immigration protests and are now calling on authorities to provide them with shelter and protection. – Reporting by Blain Herman
