Western Cape police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal bus crash on the N1 near Touws River that claimed the lives of 16 people early on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight. The bus, carrying 78 passengers, was travelling from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape when it overturned.
Among those killed were at least three children. Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken for medical treatment.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut says preliminary investigations indicate that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Traut says, “Several others sustained injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, whilst the cause of the incident remains under investigation.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident.
