Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele, says Africa has a unique opportunity to strengthen cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and drive digital transformation.
He was addressing Ambassadors, High Commissioners and representatives of African diplomatic missions ahead of the upcoming election of the next Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) in Pretoria.
Ministers from ATU Member States will elect the organisation’s new leader during the Ministerial Conference on 23 and 24 July.
Gungubele says the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing Africa’s vision of a connected, secure and digitally inclusive continent.
“Our continent stands at a defining moment in its history. The decisions we make today will shape opportunities available for future generations that determine whether technology deepens inequality or expands opportunity, strengthens our economies, improves public services and transforms the lives of our people. Our discussions are no longer limited to expanding telecommunications infrastructure. Today, we are collectively shaping Africa’s future.”
South Africa has nominated Policy and Regulatory Development Manager, Cynthia Lesufi, who says she is committed to advancing Africa’s digital footprint.
“My candidacy for the ATU Secretary General will deliver the next chapter of Africa’s digital transformation. I offer a combination of experience, vision, proven leadership to strengthen the African Telecommunication Union as a modern, agile, and resulting institution. As a Secretary General, I will celebrate meaningful connectivity and resilient digital infrastructure across our continent. But I will also champion digital sovereignty and adoption.”
