The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the Medicare24-South African Police Service tender fraud case may effectively start afresh if tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala rejects the 12-year prison term proposed by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
The NPA says the deal cannot be used against him if the plea and sentencing agreement falls through.
Matlala has pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering relating to the R228 million tender fraud case.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says, “You would understand that this investigation had already started. That is why we have got all the people that are in court. This was just going to assist in further investigations and including other people that might not already be here and adding more charges on the ones that are already there. Therefore, if this collapses we have to go back to square one and continue with the prosecution of the people that are there and also deal with the information that we have because we cannot use what is in the affidavit.”
