Calm has been restored in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, following violent protests and looting near the intersection of 8th Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street on Tuesday night.
One person was shot and killed during the incident; the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear at this stage.
Police have yet to comment on whether any suspects have been arrested.
A large police contingent has been deployed to the area to ensure calm.
