The Detroit Lions suddenly have a major question to answer in the secondary following the release of Terrion Arnold.
While fans continue to dream about splashy names like Denzel Ward, those types of trades are difficult to pull off. Instead, A to Z Sports recently highlighted five realistic cornerbacks who could help Detroit without costing Brad Holmes a premium draft pick.
Here’s a closer look at each option.
Mike Hughes
A familiar face could make plenty of sense.
Hughes spent the 2022 season with the Lions before signing with the Falcons, where he became a steady starter. He isn’t a superstar, but he’s reliable, knows Detroit’s defensive culture, and could likely be acquired for a late-round pick.
Renardo Green
Green may have the highest upside of the group.
The young 49ers corner started last season but could become expendable because of San Francisco’s impressive depth at the position. He would likely cost more than the other names, but his age and potential make him an intriguing target.
Deonte Banks
A change of scenery might be exactly what Banks needs.
The former first-round pick has struggled to meet expectations with the Giants, but he’s still only a few years removed from being one of the top cornerback prospects in the draft. Detroit could view him as a worthwhile reclamation project.
Paulson Adebo
Adebo has long seemed like a natural fit for Detroit’s defensive scheme.
The Lions reportedly had interest before he landed with the Giants, and if New York decides to move on, Holmes could revisit the idea. His experience in a similar defensive system would make the transition much easier.
Kristian Fulton
Fulton may be the best value of the entire group.
The 27 year old battled injuries last season with Kansas City, but when healthy, he’s been a productive NFL starter. If the Chiefs are willing to move him for modest compensation, he could immediately compete for a starting role in Detroit.
Holmes Has Plenty of Options
Replacing Terrion Arnold won’t be easy, but the Lions don’t necessarily need to land a Pro Bowler to improve their secondary.
As Payton pointed out, there are several realistic trade candidates who could strengthen Detroit’s cornerback room without sacrificing significant draft capital. Whether Brad Holmes makes a move remains to be seen, but it’s clear the Lions have more than a few viable options if they decide to explore the trade market.
