The Texas Rangers have recalled pitcher Gavin Collyer from AAA Round Rock, the team announced today. To make room for him on the active roster, the Rangers have designated pitcher Chris Paddack for assignment. The Rangers 40 man roster now stands at 38.
So the Chris Paddack Era was a brief one. Paddack was brought in as a temp to handle a bulk assignment behind Tyler Alexander yesterday, and now has been DFA’d. Presumably, Paddack knew that this was a one shot deal. As an Austin native, I would suspect that he expressed a willingness to join the Round Rock Express rotation once he clears waivers. Round Rock is in rather dire need of starting pitchers right now.
Collyer rejoins a bullpen that is lacking in late inning — and middle inning — options. He got off to a good start when he was first called up, but then struggled to throw strikes, something that has been a bugaboo for him throughout his career. That has continued to be an issue for him since being sent down — he has walked 11 of 45 batters he has faced since returning to Round Rock in early June, against 13 strikeouts.
