The Boston Celtics are reportedly taking calls on Jaylen Brown, and the Denver Nuggets could be a great landing spot for him.
According to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić could bypass signing an extension this summer. This has sparked plenty of trade rumors and speculation, but the Nuggets could try to convince him to sign an extension by proving they are willing to make a big move to help him out.
Adding Brown could be the move that convinces Jokić to sign an extension and make the Nuggets even better than they already are. Bill Simmons proposed this trade that would send Brown to Denver:
- Nuggets receive: Jaylen Brown and Sam Hauser
- Celtics receive: Jamal Murray and Cam Johnson
“There’s a lot of smoke billowing around Denver in general,” Simmons said on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” on Monday. “Some I believe some I don’t believe. Murray and Cam Johnson for Jaylen and Hauser, which would save Denver ten million dollars this year. The Celtics could take Cam Johnson in their trade exception. Murray is $50 million this year, $54 million (next year) and $57 million (after that), so he’s about $8 million behind Jaylen in each of those years.”
If Brown and the Celtics are ready for a divorce, this could be one of the best deals the Celtics get. It will be hard to trade Brown for a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo now, simply because there are no such players available anymore. The Celtics may have also lost a little bit of leverage with other teams if Brown is looking for a way out now.
Murray would give Jayson Tatum a new running mate, and he is an All-Star-caliber player. He was All-NBA Third-Team last season, and averaged 25.4 points per game. He has also won a championship, so he knows what it takes to meet expectations in Boston. Simmons also noted that the Celtics could then choose to keep Johnson or simply trade him for someone else.
