Traffic has been brought to a standstill as hundreds of Soweto residents march through the streets of Kliptown. The march is used to mobilise residents ahead of Tuesday’s protests against illegal immigration.
There is a strong police presence in the area and shops belonging to foreign nationals have been closed.
Residents are expected to gather at Walter Sisulu square in Kliptown before marching to the local police station to hand over a memorandum to the Station Commander.
One of the march leaders, Lumkile Mkhaliphi, says they are mobilising to reclaim South Africa.
“What we are doing is a peaceful march with March and March and we will continue to do so until our country belongs to us again and it is fully ours. We are asking illegal immigrants to leave and yes we are mobilising for Tuesday.”
