Five people, including two children, have died after a fire swept through a three-storey residential building in Doornfontein, Johannesburg. Emergency Management Services say the building on Davies Street is privately owned.
According to EMS the blaze started just before midday on Saturday.
Firefighters evacuated residents and battled the blaze before bringing it under control. Authorities have confirmed that the victims were found inside the building after an extensive search.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Media Liaison Officer, Kagiso Phasha, says the bodies will be handed over to police while investigations continue.
“Despite extensive rescue efforts, three adults and two children were found deceased. The fire has since been extinguished and the cause of the fire remains a subject of investigation. The bodies will be handed over to saps for further investigations and necessary processes. The city of johannesburg ems urges residents to prioritise fire safety by avoiding overloaded electrical plugs and keeping open flames and heating devices away from combustible materials.”
