If former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is hoping to play football in 2026, he’s quickly running out of options. The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced Friday that it would not allow teams to sign Sorsby due to the “serious and concerning” allegations surrounding the quarterback, the league said in a statement.
The CFL did not go into specific detail about those allegations, but did confirm it would not “register a contract” for Sorsby, per USA Today.
The league’s full statement read:
“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning.
“At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”
Sorsby found himself in football limbo after Texas Tech decided it wouldn’t roster Sorsby in 2026 due to gambling allegations. With college football out of the picture, Sorbsy turned his attention to the NFL, applying for the Supplemental Draft. But the NFL declined to hold the Supplemental Draft this year, and took Sorsby to task for not owning up to his mistakes.
Sorsby got himself in hot water with all parties after seeking treatment for a gambling addiction in April. Sorsby reportedly placed thousands of bets on college football, some of which included bets on Indiana when he was a member of the team.
Because of that, Sorsby was initially deemed ineligible to play in 2026 by the NCAA. He fought that decision and eventually won, with a judge determining Sorsby would serve a two-game suspension before returning to Texas Tech.
While the school was initially on board with that decision, it eventually changed course after the Big 12 threatened legal action against Texas Tech.
The decision spurred Sorsby to apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft. Upon being rejected from that — at least in 2026 — Sorsby’s representation once again implied it would fight for a more positive outcome for the quarterback.
While rumors of Sorsby’s going to the CFL didn’t really develop in the days since the NFL’s decision, the CFL apparently decided to get ahead of the issue by announcing Sorsby would not be eligible to play for it in 2026.
If Sorsby’s attempts to fight the NFL fail, he will likely try to enter the league through the 2027 NFL Draft.
