The New York Knicks ended their 53-year NBA championship drought this year. They did it with Jalen Brunson and the starting unit leading the way, along with a formidable supporting cast. Mitchell Robinson, one of the bench’s key players and the team’s longest-tenured player, will likely bring his strong inside presence and charisma to another franchise next season.
Robinson entered the league as the No. 36 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He has spent his entire pro career with New York and played an important role in its title run. The 7-foot center only played limited minutes but provided the team with a lot of hustle.

The New York Post’s Stefan Bondy reported the update about Robinson’s status with the team on X on Thursday. He cited the Knicks’ salary cap situation as the biggest hurdle him.
“Heard it’s unlikely Mitchell Robinson will be back with Knicks next season. He’s longest tenured Knick but also an unrestricted free agent. Owner James Dolan said he’s unwilling to pay into second apron so running it back with bench is not feasible.”
Robinson’s potential departure will create a huge hole in the rotation. He is also a fan favorite, which will hurt the New York faithful for a long time.
Mitchell Robinson’s NBA career
Robinson played in 397 games during his eight NBA seasons. He helped Knicks teams that failed to reach the playoffs, eliminated early in the postseason and won it all this year. The 28-year-old averages 7.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks.
Whichever team signs him will gain a relentless rebounder and consistent lob threat. Teams around the league are expected to show a lot of interest in Robinson given his experience and playing style.
