South Korea heads to the Estadio BBVA on Wednesday knowing a win over South Africa will guarantee a second-place finish in Group A at World Cup 2026 as it vies for a spot in the last 16. Even a draw in Guadalupe may be enough to snag a runner-up finish, however, if Mexico holds the Czech Republic at bay in the other Group A kick-off.

The Taegeuk Warriors are sitting pretty in second thanks to their opening win over the Czechs, while Bafana Bafana are still chasing a first win of the tournament. However, South Africa’s late equalizer against the Czech Republic last week has at least given it a lifeline, meaning a win on Wednesday could be enough to climb as high as second in the pool.
Discipline has been a major issue for South Africa, which will have two players suspended for the clash against South Korea. Themba Zwane is still banned following his red card in the opening 2-0 defeat against Mexico, while Teboho Mokoena has joined him on the sidelines after picking up two bookings.
Sphephelo Sithole is available after serving a one-match suspension, however, in what will be the first-ever meeting between these two teams. South Korea boss Hong Myung-bo will be expected to name an unchanged XI despite losing 1-0 to Mexico last time out, with LAFC’s Son Heung-min adding his usual complement of quality.
