Mexico and Czechia meet in an intriguing 2026 FIFA World Cup clash on the third and final matchday of Group A on Wednesday night.
With group standings and knockout round scenarios in mind, the question is really: Does this game matter for the Round of 32 and beyond?
Mexico was favored to win this group entering the World Cup.
Czechia was viewed as a sneaky side, and they could likely compete with the Mexican bunch.
Most likely, though, the flow of Wednesday night’s match will be impacted by the scenarios.
Does Mexico-Czechia matter?
Yes — but only for Czechia.
Mexico has already clinched first place in Group A. They’ve won each of their first two matchups, and they hold the tiebreaker (head-to-head) with South Korea, which enters Wednesday night on 3 points and the only team that could equal Mexico’s 6 points.
Czechia needs a win, though. They have a draw with South Africa and a loss to South Korea so far, so just 1 point.
The Czechs wouldn’t get through as a third-place team with 2 points (adding 1 from a draw).
With a win, though, Czechia would be on 4 points, almost certainly enough to advance, whether in second or third place.
South Africa is also on 1 point, after drawing Czechia, but has one goal worse in goal differential, which is the next tiebreaker after head-to-head.
Essentially, what to know for Czechia is a win is enough to move on, but anything less is not.
Mexico has nothing to play for in the standings, and so they’ll likely keep things safe and simple with lineups and approach.
