For the first time since 2023, the Alabama Crimson Tide have a player headed to the NBA via the NBA Draft.
As was widely expected in the lead-up to the draft, former Crimson Tide guard Labaron Philon became a first-round pick on Tuesday. The Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the 22nd overall pick.
The 6-foot-4 guard is the first Alabama player drafted since Noah Clowney was selected with the 21st overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets in 2023. Brandon Miller was previously selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets that year.
Philon was a two-year starter for the Crimson Tide who initially declared for the draft after his freshman season in Tuscaloosa. He ultimately withdrew and returned for his sophomore season, in which he averaged 22 points, five assists and 3.5 rebounds a night while playing in33 games.
The Mobile native shot 50.1 percent from the field and made 39.9 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. Philon initially signed with the Kansas Jayhawks in 2023 before requesting a release from his National Letter of Intent. He then committed to Alabama in April 2024.
Philon was ranked the No. 32 overall recruit in the class of 2024 by ESPN and 247Sports, which also ranked him as the No. 3 point guard in the nation.
