The Boston Celtics did not just lose out on trading for Milwaukee Bucks star big man Giannis Antetokounmpo when the Miami Heat scooped him with their draft pick and young player-focused offer. They also may find themselves in a bit of a pinch with star Celtics forward Jaylen Brown, who was the main attraction in Boston’s offer for the Greek Freak.
It is certainly possible that the Georgia native can be assuaged in this situation, or maybe even that he did not mind being dangled for a player of Giannis’ caliber. But there is a very real chance that Boston will need to trade Brown in the wake of the failed pursuit of the disgruntled Bucks star, as NBA salary cap expert Bobby Marks recently pointed out in an appearance on ESPN’s “Sportscenter” on Tuesday (June 23).
“Jaylen Brown still has three years left on his contract, making roughly $185 million,” said Marks. “If Jaylen Brown was going into the last year of his contract, I think basically all leverage would have been lost here.”
“Now, there’s some relationship repairing that needs to happen,” he continued. “As (senior ESPN reporter) Shams (Charania) said earlier, yes, 2022 he was certainly talked about with Kevin Durant.”
“Now, four years later with Giannis. I think the difference now is that Jaylen Brown is a top 10 player in the NBA and he was basically being swapped for a top five player here. So, I think the biggest thing is trying to repair this relationship and if it can’t be fixed, then you’re probably looking at trade suitors out there.”
