An inspector at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Witness K, has testified about her relationship with suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
Witness K told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that she began dating Mkhwanazi in 2023, a year after meeting him.
She further testified that while they were in a relationship, Mkhwanazi had already been suspended from the EMPD and frequently asked her to lend him money.
Witness K is testifying in camera partially after the commission granted her application to have only her voice audible.
She says, “His requests for financial assistance were very frequent and despite promising to do so, he did not pay me back. As his girlfriend, I made plans to assist him with groceries, paying for his legal fees and his disciplinary case at work, and help him to pay the school fees for his children. However, things got to a point where I was no longer able to assist him financially.”
