The Indiana Fever finally got back in the win column Monday night, but not before tempers flared during a chippy matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. Indiana entered the game looking to snap a two-game skid after consecutive losses to the Atlanta Dream. By the fourth quarter, the Fever appeared well on their way to doing just that, building a comfortable lead over Phoenix. That’s when one of the night’s most talked-about moments unfolded.
With less than eight minutes remaining, Caitlin Clark became tangled up under the basket with former Fever teammate DeWanna Bonner. What started as a routine foul quickly escalated into a heated exchange that involved multiple players from both teams and brought officials together for an extended review.
After sorting through the sequence, referees handed out five technical fouls, including penalties to Clark, Bonner, Sophie Cunningham, Alyssa Thomas and Myisha Hines-Allen.

Bonner’s involvement added another layer to the situation. The veteran forward began the season with Indiana before her brief stint with the franchise came to an end. Monday marked another chapter in what has become one of the more intriguing storylines surrounding the Fever’s season.

As Clark discussed the foul call with officials, Bonner exchanged words with Cunningham and Hines-Allen. Players from both teams quickly stepped in before the situation escalated further. Video of the incident spread rapidly across social media as Fever and Mercury fans debated what happened and whether the officials handled the situation correctly.
Clark inches closer to suspension threshold
The technical foul carried additional consequences for Clark. The WNBA’s disciplinary structure includes automatic fines that increase as technical fouls accumulate throughout the season. Because Monday’s technical was Clark’s fifth of the year, she is expected to receive a $1,000 fine along with a warning letter from the league.
Cunningham was also assessed a technical foul during the incident. The penalty is expected to result in a $500 fine. While neither player is in immediate danger of suspension, technical fouls can become increasingly costly as the season progresses, making emotional moments like Monday’s worth monitoring.

Fever focused on moving forward
Lost in the drama was an important result for Indiana. The Fever needed a response after dropping back-to-back games and delivered one against a talented Mercury squad featuring Thomas and Bonner. Indiana controlled much of the second half and looked far more like the team that climbed into the upper half of the WNBA standings earlier this month.
The rivalry won’t have much time to cool off, either. Indiana and Phoenix are scheduled to meet again Wednesday, giving fans an immediate rematch after Monday night’s fireworks. Considering the emotions on display late in the fourth quarter, all eyes will be on whether the lingering tension carries over into the next meeting.
For now, Clark and Cunningham will celebrate a much-needed win, even if it comes with a fine from the league office.
