The Atlanta Falcons are aiming to reach the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2017. However, one of the key players expected to help them achieve that goal found himself in serious legal trouble this offseason.
James Pearce was arrested in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Authorities also charged him with one count of aggravated stalking. The alleged victim is WNBA player Rickea Jackson.

Since then, Pearce has entered a pretrial diversion program and has rejoined the Falcons for offseason activities. It appears the organization not only expects a suspension but may also have a good idea of how long it will last.
According to reports, the Falcons are preparing for Pearce to receive at least an eight-game suspension. That expectation is based on precedent from a similar case involving former Detroit Lions defensive back Cameron Sutton.
Precedent set years earlier
Sutton was arrested on a domestic violence charge and entered a pretrial diversion program in 2024. The Lions released him shortly after his arrest. The NFL later suspended Sutton for the first eight games of the 2024 season before he returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The allegations in Pearce’s case are just as troubling as those in Sutton’s case—if not more so.

The Falcons are now waiting for the NFL to complete its investigation. Based on the information that has become public, a suspension appears all but inevitable. Once the league concludes its review, a decision is expected to follow quickly.

The NFL has taken a much stricter approach to domestic violence cases since its mishandling of the Ray Rice situation in 2014. Initially, the league issued Rice a relatively light suspension, although the Baltimore Ravens released him in September of that year.
After video footage of the incident became public, the NFL suspended Rice indefinitely, drawing widespread criticism and damaging the league’s public image.
Given the serious allegations in Pearce’s case—including claims that he attempted to strike Jackson with his vehicle—it is difficult to envision a scenario in which he avoids significant discipline. The only remaining question is how severe the NFL’s punishment will be.
