The Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape has condemned incidents of gun-related violence over this local government election season. On day one of voter registration weekend, a by-election candidate for the Democratic Alliance, Sinovuyo Dyokwe, was gunned down in Dunoon in Cape Town upon returning from a voting station in the area.
Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse says there have been other shooting incidents.
“Every death diminishes us, not only that particular candidate, but we also know of a CPF member in Mfuleni that was also killed tragically as well, but we work very closely with the South African Police Services through the PROVJOINTS, who also pull in the local law enforcement. We live in a country and a province and a city where the crime rates are exceptionally high and it’s a reflection of what happens in the daily lives of our communities, unfortunately.”
