The New England Patriots are reportedly working on an extension for Christian Gonzalez, but it may be a while before a deal gets done.
Gonzalez was absent from voluntary OTAs and was a limited participant in mandatory minicamp. He did individual work, but did not partake in any team drills. He reassured his desire to stay with the Patriots during minicamp, but noted that it was up to the team and his representation to get a deal done.
According to Patriots insider Greg Bedard, fans should not expect any update until training camp. Bedard noted that the Patriots may be planning to see where things stand when training camp starts, and if that’s the case, Gonzalez’s hold-in could drag into training camp.
“What I’ve heard is I would not expect any sort of update until training camp, and I think that’s where I think the Patriots are,” Bedard said on CLNS on Tuesday. “It’s sort of like a shrug and say, ‘We’ll see where we are at training camp.’ If that’s the case, I think it’s going to drag into training camp.”
Gonzalez showed up to mandatory minicamp, so he may still show up to training camp and just withhold from team activities. Gonzalez is one of the best corners in the game, and he has earned a payday. The only question is whether the Patriots are ready to make him one of the highest-paid corners in the league.
The team has already expressed interest in keeping him around, but clearly, there is a gap in negotiations. Otherwise, a deal would have been done by now.
