Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional between Mississippi State baseball and Georgia is June 6 (10 a.m. CT, ESPN), but Georgia will be without one of its star players.
Tre Phelps, an All-SEC first-team third baseman, is serving a one-game suspension against MSU. It stems from an ejection in Georgia’s previous game against Liberty in the Athens Regional final.
The winner of the best-of-three series between No. 14 Mississippi State (43-17) and No. 3 Georgia (49-12) will advance to the College World Series.

Tre Phelps ejected, suspended vs Mississippi State
Phelps was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct in the sixth inning against Liberty on May 31 while celebrating a go-ahead home run.
Georgia was trailing for most of the game until Phelps’ two-run homer. The umpire, according to the Athens Banner-Herald, said he was ejected for taunting the Liberty dugout and Liberty’s first baseman while rounding the bases.

Georgia coach Wes Johnson was also ejected from the game for arguing with the umpire about Phelps’ ejection.
Is Wes Johnson suspended?
Johnson is not suspended for Mississippi State versus Georgia.
Player ejections for unsportsmanlike conduct result for an automatic suspension, while coach ejections do not. It’s similar to when Mississippi State coach Brian O’Connor was ejected this season against Texas but did not receive a suspension.

Phelps is hitting .370 with 19 home runs, 57 RBIs and 77 runs.
He is a junior from Atlanta.
