Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has hailed the signing of an agreement between Eskom and the Zululand Energy Terminal as a milestone. The agreement aims to unlock South Africa’s first large-scale liquefied natural gas imports and gas-to-power infrastructure in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

Ramokgopa says the historic moment is a step towards securing the country’s energy security and unlocking investment.
“By 2030, in terms of the same IRP, we anticipate decommissioning about eight gigawatts of coal-fired electricity generation in the country, and that ought to be replaced by a flexible, dispatchable energy source that is also capable of supporting system stability. So the gas has been identified as that energy source.”
