The Rangers were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 on Wednesday night at the United Center.
Here are some takeaways…
– In a rare color vs. color jersey matchup, both squads rocked their centennial sweaters.
– Igor Shesterkin was tremendous to start this one. He stretched across to make a blocker stop on Andre Burakovsky off a big early chance, then stonewalled Connor Bedard later in the frame with a pad save — those were the biggest of the 10 stops Shesterkin made in a scoreless opening 20 minutes.
– Chicago’s offense continued humming and got to Shesterkin in the second. Defenseman Louis Crevier opened the scoring seven minutes into the frame on a shorthanded breakaway, then Bedard doubled the advantage a few minutes later, putting home his 19th goal of the season.
The Hawks scored another in the period, but that was waved off after a challenge because of a hand pass.
– Bedard struck again just four minutes into the third period, this time setting things up and picking up the secondary assist on Tyler Bertuzzi‘s odd angle goal over Shesterkin’s shoulder. The young winger’s two-point night brought his total to 42 for the season, which is good enough to push him into a tie for the fourth-most in the league.
– Looking to spark the power play, Mike Sullivan bumped up young defenseman Scott Morrow to quarterback the top unit, however they were still unable to convert on both of their opportunities in the third. After an 0-for-3 night with just two shots, they are now goalless in each of their last 12 chances with the man advantage since losing Adam Fox to LTIR.
Chicago’s Spencer Knight stopped all 21 of New York’s shots, handing them their first road shutout of the season.
