In Phillip Rivers’ return to the NFL, he provided the Indianapolis Colts with some juice and stability on offense.
Rivers finished Sunday’s game 18-for-27 passing for 120 yards with a touchdown and a late interception.
Up until the final seconds of the game, Rivers kept the ball out of harm’s way, managed the game, and helped the offense sustain drives. The Colts were 5-for-13 on third downs and held the ball longer than Seattle did.
The team fought hard on both sides of the ball throughout the game. However, at the end of the day, a loss is a loss for a team that very much needed a win.
“This isn’t about me,” Rivers said, via Colts.com. “We got a team that’s scrapping like crazy to try to stay alive and get in the postseason. So obviously, we’re all disappointed. Came up just short, game kind of played out just how we thought it was going to play out in terms of how we were going to win the game, kind of one of those grind-it-out kind of games. And we didn’t find a way to get it done, is the bottom line.”
The offense didn’t have enough firepower to put the Seahawks away when they had the lead, and the defense held on as long as they could against one of the most productive offenses in football before coming up short.
The Colts are now 8-6 on the season — two games behind the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South lead and a full game behind the Houston Texans for the final playoff spot in the AFC.
Things do not get any easier for the Colts down the stretch, who face the 10-win 49ers, the 9-win Texans, and the 10-win Jaguars to round out the regular season.
